Gdansk is famous for St. Dominic’s Fair, which takes place every summer. But those who love slow food and unique products can enjoy the lively market atmosphere in winter, too, just before Christmas. The Christmas Fair in Gdansk starts already on 5 December.
The Christmas Fair in Gdansk has already become a tradition. Everyone who spends their time in Gdansk knows that in December the Coal Market is the most festive place in the city. Angel, Christmas Eve, Snowy Chimney, Cinnamon and Chocolate streets are created specifically during that time. They are lined with stands with ecological food from the region, aromatic spices and hot drinks. You will feel the true Christmas spirit the moment you enter the place! This year, just like in 2014, visitors will be welcomed by two illuminated entrance gates, decorated with three huge three-metre baubles.
Guests to the Christmas Fair will be surprised to see its completely new scenery. A wooden, three-storey windmill is just one of the novelties. It includes a gastronomic centre at the bottom, which offers food and mulled wine served in special, collector’s ceramic Fair mugs. Two higher stories will be devoted to angels and saints respectively carved in wood by Michał Ostoja-Lniski, a famous artist from Kociewie. What is more, there will be new illuminations specially designed for this Christmas.
Believe in Santa Claus
There would be no holidays without that gentleman. And even though he is very busy before Christmas, he always finds time to meet with all children (both the smaller and the bigger ones) in Gdansk. If you are lucky enough, you will not only meet Santa Claus but also receive a sweet gift and a special commemorative card with the following dedication: “Younger or older, never lose belief!” For many the pre-Christmas time means frantic search for gifts and products later used to prepare holiday dishes, but it is also charged with an atmosphere of light-hearted fun. Every year children at the Fair have a chance to enjoy themselves on a skating rink and a merry-go-round drawn by fabulous horses.
Kisses and enchanted attractions
If you feel cold during wintertime, you can try delicious mulled wine. But there is something more. The Christmas Fair in Gdansk has prepared a place where all lovers can manifest their feelings. Called the Kissable Circle, it is where you can steal a kiss from your beloved under traditional mistletoe! Everything under the watchful eye of angels who will keep sneaking past the stands. As regards the stands themselves, they will offer unique gifts: original, hand-made Christmas tree decorations, hats, toys and ceramics. You will surely find the perfect gift for those you love!
Healthy and tasty
Christmas cuisine is one of the main attractions of Polish holidays. Everyone looks forward to trying its delicious dishes. You can taste them on the spot at the Christmas Fair in Gdansk and buy unique, ecological products solely from the region you can later use to prepare traditional and healthy recipes.
Offer of help
The most important thing about Christmas is that we realize it is worth helping others. There will be a special charity event held at the Christmas Fair for the patients of Father Eugeniusz Dutkiewicz SAC Hospice in Gdansk. Those who will use the merry-go-round or the rink or visit the “Hospice Foundation and Friends” stand will have a chance to make their own contribution to that great work.
Gdansk Christmas fairs restore the original, traditional atmosphere of holidays. During this special time, it is worth replacing the omnipresent rush with tasting, choose healthy, traditional food instead of products from supermarkets and most of all enjoy ourselves.
