Although it may seem highly improbable, first grapevines were cultivated on Słupsk cemetery hills in the 17th century. They were brought to Pomorskie by princess Anna De Croy, because storing wine that had been imported by local clergy turned out to be problematic. Wine went bad very quickly, and became unsuitable for sacral purposes. Founding a vineyard was a way to help the monks.

The history of wine production in Pomorskie goes back many centuries. Today, Feliks Karnicki is the man who brings it back to life.

Głobino is a small village near Słupsk. Here, stretching on more than two hectares are picturesque grapevines.  It is here that Karnicki family decided to found a vineyard, where they produce red and white wines. According to experts, their products have full body and fragrance.

-Our wines are wines of the North. They have more acidity, but have many qualities. Because of our co-operation with universities of life sciences, we know what we produce. The primary quality of our red wine is presence of resveratrol, an anti-oxidant that repairs broken DNA. Looking globally, it is a chemical phenomenon in the world of wines. It turns out that resveratrol is present only in grapes that are cultivated in extreme conditions. And let’s be honest, weather conditions in northern Poland are far from what can be seen in Spain or Italy – says Feliks Karnicki.

The owner of Anna De Croy vineyard also says that research revealed that wine manufactured there is free of other harmful substances that may affect human body.

– Our wines are 100% natural, no chemistry added. They are also not mass-produced. It is a local, top-quality product – says Feliks Karnicki.

Anna De Croy is one of the largest vineyards in Poland. Feliks Karnicki regards himself a precursor of wine production in Poland.

The volume of wine production each year depends on the season, and more specifically – on the weather. On average, about 1.5 kilograms of grapes are collected from one vine, which gives 0.7 litres of wine. The math is simple: one vine, one bottle of wine. However, in order for it to reach customers, time is needed. A lot of it. All because wine production process takes a minimum of two years. The first half of a year is fermentation, and next, long months – ageing. Only after around 1.5 years wine gains characteristics responsible for its flavour. The vineyard produces several thousand bottles of wine annually.

What is interesting is that the Karnicki family also produces other, healthy drinks. These include fresh juices, made from black chokeberries, cherries, rowan, strawberries, raspberries, or apples. They are available in exclusive restaurants, hotels, and SPA centres.

Many aficionados of Polish wine visit Anna De Croy vineyard out of curiosity. They want to witness wine production first-hand. Feliks Karnicki says that he had, on numerous occasions, trained waiters and sommeliers from top Polish restaurants. After all, such knowledge should not be learned through the grapevine…
