The expansion of the Terminal at Gdansk Airport, which began in 2019, has been completed. Thanks to the new space, the comfort of passenger service will increase.

Today, the opening ceremony of the pier was held at Gdansk Airport on June 23 with the participation of several hundred guests. The new part of the Terminal will be available for passengers till the end of June.

Another great investment stage at our Airport is coming to an end. A difficult time for the aviation industry is behind us. At Gdansk Airport, however, we have taken advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to make a development leap that has positioned us at the forefront and far ahead of the competition. We made a bold decision and completed the investment, despite the crisis in aviation and the losses suffered by companies in our industry. In hindsight, the situation on the investment and construction market, rising prices and galloping inflation, the construction of the pier was done on good terms and for a good price said Tomasz Kloskowski, the President of Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport.

We are giving passengers a new, comfortable space that will make their service faster, more efficient and conducted in excellent conditions. The larger passenger terminal is good news especially for those flying to non-Schengen countries such as the UK, Ireland and Georgia and to holiday destinations in Turkey, Egypt and soon Mexico, Dominican Republic and Thailand, as well as Zanzibar and Cuba. Travellers to these destinations will be served at the new pier. Gdansk Airport is entering a higher level of service and we hope that our guests will feel it. It is especially important on the eve of the holiday season, which we hope will be very busy for us, thanks to the constantly increasing number of passengers – added Tomasz Kloskowski.

Thanks to the pier, the Gdansk Airport gains almost 16 thousand square meters of new space (until now it was about 45 thousand square meters). It will serve travellers from Schengen and non-Schengen countries. The arrivals area is on the ground floor of the pier, and the departures area is on the first floor. The operation and management of the new facility will be specified by the ability to adapt the departure points to current needs by increasing or decreasing the size of the Schengen and non-Schengen areas respectively.

The number of departure gates has been increased from 20 to 30. There are more check-in desks in the departures area (an increase from 6 to 8) and the arrivals area (from 8 to 12). We have a larger baggage reclaim hall and arrival baggage room. There are two new bus gates at the new pier, through which passengers will go directly from the terminal to the buses and then go to their planes. There are 4 new aircraft sleeves at the new pier and we now have 9 in total.

The contract for the new passenger terminal pier at Gdansk Airport was signed on 15 October 2019. The construction began at the end of 2019 and was carried out by DORACO Construction Corporation for more than PLN 255 million net. The investment was financed with bonds issued by the Airport in cooperation with Bank Pekao S.A. and with own funds.

The western pier of the passenger terminal was designed by PIG Architekci [PIG Architects] studio, which from the conception and then throughout the construction period provided direct author’s supervision over the investment. The architectural assumption was to continue the spatial and functional solutions, the structural layout and the composition of the external facades of the existing terminal. The most characteristic element of the new pier is the roof. Its form, through the repeated arrangement of skylights, refers to the roofing of the main body of the terminal, a very characteristic element of Gdansk Airport. It is also a reference to the industrial and port architecture that is important for the identity of Gdansk.

The history of passenger terminal construction at Gdansk Airport dates back to 1997, when Terminal T1 was built. In 2012, the largest part of the new T2 Terminal was built, which was related to the Euro 2012 European Football Championships played at the time in Poland and Ukraine. In 2015, T2 Terminal was extended by the arrival part, and now (2022) by a new pier, which is an extension of T2 Terminal towards the west.
