Pomorskie is famous for its strong alcoholic beverages. The one that deserves special attention is “the vodka of Gdańsk” – Goldwasser liqueur, whose history dates back to the 16th century. It is one of the oldest liqueurs known anywhere in the world. What makes it special is the specks of genuine gold that float in it, which are believed to have healing power.
Another liqueur worth recommending is juniper liqueur Machandel, manufactured according to an old Dutch recipe. Locked in an original bottle resembling a barrel, it is traditionally relished with the smoked plum of Żuławy.
Beer was brewed in what is now the Pomorskie Region as early as the Middle Ages. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, there used to be more than 400 breweries in Gdańsk and its vicinity! You will find the old brewing traditions still alive and well in the taste of the region’s beers.
