The Basilica is most famous for its Amber Altar, currently under construction. When finished, it will to be the largest amber artefact in the world, exceeding in size even the famous Amber Room in St Petersburg, Russia. For the time being, only the central part of the altar along with the amber robe of Saint Mary’s painting, elements of the supporting structure and surrounding statues have been completed. The altar was designed by Professor Stanisław Radwański in collaboration with Mariusz Drapikowski. Apart from the altar, other pieces of sacred amber art can be admired, including a monstrance, chalices, ciboria and many more. It is a votive offering made by local amber craftsmen in gratitude for Poland’s independence after the events of 1980 and 1989.
